COSSACK-GHOST TOWN IN THE PILBARA

COSSACK
GHOST TOWN IN NORTH WEST WESTERN AUSTRALIA

GETTING THERE
Cossack is 52 km from Karratha and 15 km from Roebuck on Highway 1.We used Karratha as the base and stayed at:

HISTORY
In May 1883, Walter Padbury arrived with his stock on the ship Tien Tsin at the mouth of the Harding River where Cossack now stands. Originally it was called Tien Tsin Harbour but was renamed Cossack after HMS Cossack which brought Governor Frederick Weld to WA in 1871 and renamed in 1872.It was the most significant port in the North West. Roebourne nearby and Cossack became a significant pearling area and there were some 1,500  Malays, Japanese and Aboriginals involved in pearling  and some 57 ships  by 1895. Pearling shifted to Broome and as the port could not handle the larger ships by 1910 the town had died. Most of the Heritage buildings were built in the 1880's  and stand today.
