"To The Fishermen" Memorial Freemantle

"TO THE FISHERMEN"

THE JETTY

FREEMANTLE

"To The Fishermen" often referred to as "The Jetty" located on Mews Road, Fishing Harbour Freemantle  is a tribute to the local fishermen who started the fishing industry in Freemantle. The memorial comprises twelve columns  with the names of 608 fishermen who pioneered the industry (the names were taken from  pre-1947  fishing license records for all those that participated.

In the second half of the 19th century, unrest in Europe forced many to migrate and many came to Freemantle and set up  near Rockingham. A group from Italy arrived in 1885  and later set up the Rockingham Fishing Company, a cooperative  of 15 working five boats. In 1897 the South Jetty (near where the memorial sits)  became known as Fisherman's Jetty. It was a harsh life and the catch of herring, snapper, mullet and garfish was never certain. At the outbreak of WW2 many of the Italians were interned. This memorial was opened in October 2004, and was designed by John Terry and Greg James.

The Stingrays of Hamelin Bay WA

 STINGRAYS OF HAMELIN BAY

The coastline  between Cape Leeuwin and Naturaliste is beautiful but there is a unique event in Hamelin Bay and it involves a number of stingrays that frequent the shallows of the beach near the old jetty.

Two types of stingray frequent the shallows. The smooth stingray that is grey or black and can grow to 4.3 m in length and also the eagle ray which is small, diamond shaped and can be brown, green or yellow with white spots.

As these animals are wild they can  be dangerous if they feel threatened.

Strombolites-Lake Clifton Western Australia

THE STROMBOLITES OF LAKE CLIFTON WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Only a few kilometers south of Mandurah in Western Australia in the Yalgorup National Park and located in Lake Clifton is a THROMBOLITE REEF, one of the few remaining in the world and one of the largest in Australia.

Thrombolites are one of the first life forms dating back 570 million years. The microorganisms that live in these structure produce oxygen by photosynthesis and essential to life. The microorganisms are able to precipitate calcium carbonate from the water as they photosynthesise forming the thrombolite structure. The structures in Lake Clifton are believed to be over 2,000 years old. Lake Clifton is apparently unique in that it has an up-flowing of fresh water that is high in calcium carbonate.
