HIBAKUJUMOKU-LONE SURVIVOR OF HIROSHIMA

 LONE EUCALYPT TREE
IT SURVIVED THE ATOMIC BOMB AT HIROSHIMA

It is fair to say you do not see many eucalypt trees in Japan as they are rare. I know of two. Sitting beside the moat of the castle in Hiroshima, five hundred metres from the center of the blast in 1945 was a lone eucalpyt tree. From photos before the bomb blast it looked quite large. Everything for at least a kilometer was obliterated and none of the pine trees for a wider area survived but the eucalupyt tree did. It stands there today alive and well although a little stunted and struggling. The Japnese call it Hibakujumoku , or Survivor Tree  and one that survived the bombings.

The Horshima experience was quite something and a must place to visit. If you are there with school kids they will zero in on any Gaijin (foreigner) and very politely ask to talk to you in English and then ask for a pledge for no more bombs. After three pledges it became tiring but interesting and ever so polite.
