ORD RIVER DIVERSION DAM

The Ord River Diversion Dam located on the Ord River at Kununurra in the Kimberly's of Western Australia was opened in 1967 by the then Primmme Minister Robert Menzies and was the start of themassive Or River Irrigation Project.It went on to creat Lake Argyl , the largest lake in Australia and the utilization of the valley along the river . The Diversion Dam consists of 20 radial gates in a concrete structure which controls the water flow down the river. It is also a major crossing to the airport, the former crossing was locate at to the north west of Kununurra and called Ivanhoe Crossing (see photos below), Up from the dam there are fresh water crocodiles but down-stream from Ivanhoe Crossing they are all salt-water. (No swimming there).A good place to stay in Kununurra is:-
