CHRIST THE REDEEMER
RIO DE JANEIRO
The first visit to the Christ the Redeemer Staue in Rio was some years back and not as crowded as the last visit in December 2019.The first time was shrouded in cloud and there were no views, nor could you see the statue from the base. This time it was crowded and in full sunlight. It took about an hour and a half to make our way from the crowded entrance up to the statue by small vans. There is a train but this only took bookings so it was a long waiting line.
The statue is 38 Metres high and the arms extend 28 metres but it is not the largest staue of Christ. It is th fourth largest and there are a number that are taller in Mexico and Vietnam and the tallest 34.2 metres is in Bolivia.Earlier in 2019 I had visited one in Maratea Italy at 21.2 meters and without crowds and in some ways equally spectacular. See below.
CRISTO REDENTOR in Portuguese is made of reinforced concrete and soap stone sits atop Corcorado Mountain at 700 metres at the back of Rio in the Tijuca Forest National Park. It was designed by Frenchman Paul Landowski and completed in 1931.
We stayed at:
SHERATON GRAND RIO HOTEL & RESORT
It is close by to Leblon , a pleasant and relatively safe area with good restaurants
MARATEA IS SOME 2.5 HOURS SOUTH OF NAPLES BY TRAIN.
