THE MO'AI OF EASTER ISLAND

 THE MO'AI OF EASTER ISLAND

A LONG WAY FROM ANYWHERE

Easter Island is not like any other holiday destination you will find anywhere. Firstly it is probably the most isolated place in the world and you can feel it as you are 3,756 KM from Santiago Chile, 4,231 from Tahiti and 7,051 from Auckland. LATAM flies into Easter Island from Santiago and this is the best access but look at a five plus hour flight. The town of Hanga Roa is small and with limited facilities. There are some reasonable hotels and many small apartments that are basic. There are few shops that sell essential like food  but they are basic. There are a few OK restaurants. The reason to go there is to see the stark beauty of the island and the 900 or so Mo'ai.The best way to get around the island , which is small is by car  (there are car hire facilities with a driver).

We stayed at the

PIKERA URI ECO LODGE

The Moai are scattered around the island and a monolithic human figures carved by the Rapa Nui people between 1250 and 1500. Nearly half remain in the quarry and the others are everywhere around the island usually facing inland. Most are buried deeply in the ground with the upper body visible. Some are as tall as ten meters and  weight 80-100 tons.As there are essentially no trees on the island how they were moved around remains a mystery. You can walk  through and to all the Moai

Two full days is adequate to see the island and all the Moai and the town of Hanga Roa.The climate is sub-tropical but we found the weather cold even in summer with strong winds and some rain so take a warm jacket.
