SUNGNYEMUN or South Gate
The South Gate was erected in 1398 and was one of four gates into the walled city. Major trepairs were undertaken in 1448. In 1907 -1908, the walls around the gate were destroyed by the Japanese and there was further damage to the gate itself during the Korean War of 1950-1953. Between 1961-1963 the gate was totally refurbished and in 2008 an arsonist set fire to the roof which was destroyed. Today it is back to it old state and worthy of a visit.
Opened in 1964 the Namdaemun Market is the largest traditional market in South Korea
