 THE BEACHES

CLOSEST TO

THE CITY OF MELBOURNE

BEACONSFIELD PARADE PORT MELBOURNE TO ST KILDA

PORT MLBOURNE

Take the 109 tram in Collins Street and it will end at Port Melbourne beach, a trip of about 4.5 km.To the right you will find two beaches. Just beyong Princes Pier is New Beach, a beach constructed with the apartments to the north of the beach. Further along is the unremarkable Sandridge Beach but a pleasant place to walk to essentially the mouth of the River Yarra. If container termi9nals are your thing there is a good view of the gantry's from the end of Sandridge Beach. Spend some time on Princes Pier, a historic pier that from 1915 when completed until 1969 was a major point where immigrants arrived into Melbourne. The pier was originally 580 metres and ran parrallel to Station Pier to the east. After 1969 it was no longer used, fell into poor repair until the first 196 metres were refurbished leaving the old piles in place.Originally called New Railway Pier it was renamed in 1920 after the Prince of Wales (Edward VIII) who had visited.
