RICH MINING HISTORY AND
''OLD WEST' TOWNSHIP
Queenstown has a rich mining history and sits in a rugged 'moonscape'' that is quite unique, the result of logging and copper mining in the 1900's. Queenstown was first explored as early as 1862 but it was in 1881 when alluvial gold was found and in 1892 copper mining commenced. In the late 1890's the Mt Lyell railway to Teepookana and Strahan provided better access to Queenstown and to transpoer copper from Queenstown to its markets.Today it is a quirky "Old West" town with some unique old buildings and hotels and a fascinating rugged landscape.
