The visit to San Marino was a day trip from Bologna by train and then by bus.  San Marino is a small ( 61 SQ KM) area in the north central Italy with some 33,000 people and survives on financial services and tourism.

The capital sits on Mount Titano, also called San Marino and the three towers of San Marino sit on neighbouring peaks and provide a great view of Italy and date back to the 11th century. The place is old, with some historical significance and has good restaurants and a great place to visit if you are in north central Italy. From Bologna take a train to Rimini and then a bus to San Marino.
