DUNHUANG
MAJOR POINT ON THE SILK ROAD
Dunhuang started off as a frontier or garrison town established by President Wu (Han Dynasty)and its name meas "Blazing Beacon ' which referred to the beacons that were lit when attacked by marauding nomadic tribes. Some indicate that Dunhuang was established around 100 AD. Because it was an oasis on the edge of the Gobi Desert it became an important provisioning point for those setting off across the desert. From the 500's to 900's Dunhuang was the main stop between Ancient China and the rest of the world and was the major intersection of the three main silk roads, north, central and south,
The Silk Road Hotel is a short walk from the Sand Dunes and ten minutes from the Magao Caves or "Caves of a Thousand Buddha's", a UNESCO World Heritage Site which has been extremely well done and a must see.
