The story of Red Dog is a great one and worth a read and watch the movie but there is so much more to see in Damoer and Karratha. Both are mining towns with major ports that ship out iron ore and natural gas from the Qoodside facilities off-shore. Stay at a good motel such as:-

Follow the iron train line east ( that goes to Tom Price) for 100 kilometres on well made road to Python Pool and Chichester millstream national park. Marvel at the beauty of the Hammersley Ranges in the Pilbara Region. Check out the ghost town and the beautiful coast in Cossack of visit Dampier and see the red dog statue and its pretty beaches.There are regular flights to and from Perth and Karratha
