THE HISTORY OF THE US HIGHWAY SYSTEM

The highway, the first of the US highway system was opened on November 11, 1926 and covered 2,448 miles from Chicago to California (Santa Monica) and travelling through Missouri (St Louis and Springfield) Kansas Texas, New Mexico ,and Arizona.It spawned a TV series and a number of songs and even today, although much of the highway has been replaced  you can still see the remains of some of the tacky old motels (particularly around Flagstaff AZ.
