THE POPE'S EYE-PORT PHILLIP BAY

THE 'POPE'S EYE'
A TINY HISTORICAL BLIP IN PORT PHILLIP BAY
We stay at the Hotel Sorrento

The best way to see the Pope's Eye is to catch the Sorrento to Queenscliff Ferry and when traveling from East to West goes close to the horse shoe shaped reef of blue stone blocks that was erected in the 1880's as a fort to protect Port Phillip Bay. It was never completed because of improved fortifications at Point Nepean and Swan Island. It remains today as an ill-defined 4 HA of man-made reef with a central eye and surrounds that are popular for divers. It is also haven for sea birds. The builder also constructed the Queenscliff Fort and a few other notable buildings in Melbourne. The Pope's Eye is 5 KM north of Portsea and  3 KM east of Queenscliff and is part of the Port Phillip Marine National Park. No reference can be found as to the origin of the name other than the shape of the reef that is  only about 2 Meters deep within the eye.
