History in Brief
Western involvement started with the French in the 17th Century who drove off most of the indigenous people. In the 18th Century Great Britain and France battled ownership until 1795 when the Brits took over.in 1888 it was established as the capital of the British Windward Islands. In 1974 the island gained independence from Britain and all was well until 1979 and a Marxist Revolutionary government took over under the rule of Maurice Bishop.He was overthrown in 1983 and executed by the army. The US invaded the island in August 1983 and took control and removed the army and its Cuban allies. Since then the island has returned to democracy.
Grenada now relies on tourism as its main driving force.
