The name Fraser Island has interesting history. Captain James Fraser,
captain of the Brig, Sterling Castle travelling
from Sydney to Singapore went aground north of the island. The crew including
Fraser’s wife Eliza set out in two life boats for Brisbane. The boat with Eliza
Fraser fell behind and taking water and landed on what was then known as the Great
Sandy Island. Captain Fraser died and Eliza lived with the aboriginals on the
island. She was rescued after three months and within six months had married
another sea captain and returned to England where she became a side show in Hyde Park telling elaborate stories about her
time with the natives. She was killed in a carriage accident in Melbourne in
1858.
