TAPAS IN THE STREETS OF SAN SEBASTIAN

SAN SEBASTIAN
EATING TAPAS WITH THE CROWDS
On the two visits to San Sebastian over the years I recall with fondness the fun of eating tapas in the numerous bars that dotted the small streets of San Sebastian. You would jostle through the crowd lining the bar and point to the tapas you wanted and handed over you eempty jam ja=r for a refill or rough Spanish white or red and do this many times and the bar person always seemed to rember who you were and how much food and drink you had taken. You would them move on to the next and the enxt and stagger hom wuit happy after a fun evening, not recalling too much about the quality of the food or the wine.Perhaps a thing of the past in the near term.

The word tapas comes from the Spanish 'TAPAR' to cover and there are various theorries how thi became the name of tasty snacks, either hot or cold. It seems the tradiion may have developed in Spain where the evening meal can be bwtwwn 10PM to midnight so there is ample time to play after leaving work and when dinner would be served.

In San Sebastian the tapas bars have developed more than most other places  and are a fun experience.
