Fremantle is 19 K south west of Perth at the entrance to the Swan River. It was first settled in 1829 and by 1850 it became an important entry point for convicts from the UK. By the early 1880’s it was a very busy port feeding the WA Gold Rush. Fremantle is renowned for its well-preserved architectural heritage, including convict-built structures and many gold rush-era buildings. We stayed at:-

Prison
Referred
to as the Fremantle Goal, this World Heritage site covers six HA. It was
initially used for convicts transported from Britain, but was transferred to
the colonial government in 1886 for use for locally-sentenced prisoners. Since
1991 it has been established as a heritage site.
Round House
The Round House was the first permanent building built in the Swan River Colony. Built in late 1830 and opened in 1831, it is the oldest building still standing in Western Australia.The Round House was used for colonial and indigenous prisoners until 1886, when control of the Convict Establishment prison was transferred to the colony. After that the Round House was used as a police lockup until 1900, when it became the living quarters for the chief constable and his family

This old building was started
in 1852 and was intended to stores food, clothing and other supplies for the
colony. It is now the WA Shipwreck Museum,
Freemantle Market
The market open in 1897
and in 1975 underwent major restoration.
