 CATERACT GORGE

LAUNCESTON TASMANIA

Map Courtesy of Launceston Attractions

Cataract Gorge is at the edge of Launceston and only 1.5 km from the City Centre and a must see if visiting. Walk the pathway from Kings Bridge into the Gorge or drive up the Basin Road and approach from First Basin where there are restqaurants , a  chair lift and a swimming pool and of course numerous interesting walks. The chair lift has the longest single span at 308 metres of any similar chair lift. The gorge was first discovered by a European in 1804 (William Collins) and the path from Kings Bridge was built by volunteers in the 1890's. The toll gate still sits near Kings Bridge.Stay in Launceston as there are many good places. We selected The Grand Hotel Launceston in Tamar Street, comfortable and well located.
