STONEY CREEK TRESTLE BRIDGE
Nowra Nowra
The Stoney Creek Trestle Bridge is located 3km off the Princes Highway between Lakes Entrance and Nowra Nowra (5 km from Nowra Nowra and 335 km from Melbourne)
In 1916, when the train line from Melbourne to Bairnsdale was extended to Orbost, the 97 km of track was laid through difficult terrain and the bridge was one of a number built. It is 247 m long and 20 m high and made of red iron bark and grey box and the largest standing bridge in Victoria. It operated for 60 years but was damaged by fire in 1980 and finaly closed in 1987 with the last train crossing that year. The bridge is well signed and the road in is not sealed but well made and worthwhile to take a look.
