MALDON HISTORIC GOLD TOWN IN VICTORIA

 MALDON

BACK TO THE 19TH CENTURY

Maldon is 145 km from Melbourne via the Calder Highway, then to Castlemaine.

Known as "Australia's Most Notable Town" because of its 19th century atmosphere, Malson is an interesting town to visit. Settler's first arrived here in 1836 and settled at the base of Mt Tarrengower and Cairn Curran. Gold was found in 1853 and people quickly moved in and by 1856 Madon was proclaimed as a town. Today it has retained much of the 19th century feel to it, and has a number of interesting old shops on the Main Street and somke historic old buildings around town. Many buildings have retained the old style advertising for Reco flour and Pennant Kerosine. There is a historic train station that has a tourist train between Maldon and Castlemaine. There is reasonably good signage around town defining the history. Also visit Mt Tarrengower for a good view of the surrounding countryside.
