The lowest cost way to visit the Panama canal is via the Hop On Hop Off Bus which will take you right to the viewing area.They have a two day pass which is marginally more than a one-day pass so this gives you the opportunity to visit essentially all places in Panama city safely.

Go early to the Canal visitor centre as it gets very crowded.

The Panama Canal is a 77 KM waterway linking the pacific and Atlantic Oceans with locks at each end  that raise the ships to 25 Meters above sea level to allow the crossing via the Gatum Lake. The canal was commenced in 1881 by France  and finished by the US who took over in 1904 and completed the canal in 1914. The operation of the canal was handed over to Panama in 1974
