Ouro Preto which means Black Gold  is a city in and former capital of the state of  Minas Gerais a former colonial mining town located in the  Serra do Espinhaco mountains .It is a UNESCO World Heritage site.Ouro Preto, one of the original Gold Rush towns. 800 tons of gold were sent to Portugal in the eighteenth century which did not include what was used ilegally or retained to decorate churches. In 1730 this was the most populated city in Brazil and more than in San Francisco or new York at the same time. Today it is a very different and interesting old Colonial Town with steep cobbled streets and colorful colonial houses.
Access is via a two-hour bus ride from Belo Horizonte.Accommodation is in old-fashioned Coloial Pousadas. We stayed in Pousada Solar De Opera and it was an excellent place in a great location on the main street just down from the major Square.
