Salvador is the capital of Bahia State is the fourth largest city in Brazil. It was foundered by the Portuguese in 1549 as the capital of Brazil and is one of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas. The Pelourinho District of the Upper Town is a UNESCO Woeld Heritage Site. Salvador was one of the first slave ports in the Americas and the city is a center of Afro-Brazilian culture. It is alo one of the worst crime cities in Brazil and generally unsafe out of the major tourist area of Pelourinho.
