BUKHARA - UZBEKISTAN
A KEY PART OF THE SILK ROAD
From Khiva we traveled by train to Bukhara. It was not a high speed train and was old but comfortable. The Khiva Train Station was relatively new and elaborate and as clearly foreigners we were ushered into the First Class Lounge (for a small fee) and were then assisted to the train. Located on the Silk Road the city has been a center of trade, culture and religion for years .During the 800's and 900's Bukhara became a major center of the Islamic World second only to Baghdad. The historic center contains numerous mosques and madrassas and is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
In Bukhara we stayed essentially on the edge of the Old Town close to all the sights. The accommodation was basic and clean and the staff helpful and courteous.
