Granite Island is a small granite island off the coast of Victor Harbor , 82KM south of Adelaide. As there are places to see around Victor harbor on the Fleurieu Peninsula best to stay in Victor Harbor. For those who take  an interest , the word harbor (American speeling is used around South Australia in a number of places, insead of the English "Harbour"' It seems the harbour was established under the Harbors Act 1913. It was originally called Port Victor after a shiwreck nearby. There you go!


Granite island was first identified by white people in 1837 and the town established  in 1863. There was once a whaling station on Granite Island and a large population of fairy penhuins, now almost gone. The scenery on the island is excellent and there is an easy walk around the cliff areas. Access is via a privately ownerd horse-drawn tram that travels across a wooden causeway.
