MATERA
ITALY
CAVE DWELLINGS IN AN ANCIENT RIVER CANYON
Matera was a fascinating place and unlike any other town in Italy. It lies in two canyons carved by the Gravina River and has a complex of cave dwellings carved into the walls of the canyon. It is said to be one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world.
By the late 1800's,Matera's cave dwellings were noted for the poverty, poor sanitation and rampant disease. The place was evacutaed in 1952 and the people relocated and the place was abandonned until the 1980's. Vision and investment resulted in the dwellings being converted into hotels, restaurants and homes. It became a World Heritage site in 1993.
