OURO PRETO
Ouro Preto is located in the state of Minas Gerias in Brazil and was a gold rush town in the 18th century. The old Portuguese colonial era buildings have been retained and in 1980 it was named Brazil's first World Heritage site. Surrounded by the Espinazo Mountains, the gold vein was discovered at the end of the 17th century, when Brazil was a Portuguese colony. It was named "Ouro Preto (black gold)," and the town grew rapidly in the gold rush and became the capital of the state of Minas Gerais. However, in the 19th century, gold veins were exhausted. In 1897, the state capital moved to Belo Horizonte. When the gold ran out, the city of Ouro Preto declined and escaped modernization and the entire 18th century streets and architecture has remained. It is now one of Brazil's leading tourist destinations, with interested cobbled streets, good restaurants and old churches.It is a two-hour bus ride from Belo Horizonte to Ouro Preto. The town was very safe and easy to walk around and there are many very good boutique hotels. We stayed at;
