C 47 B DAKOTA MEMORIAL
REWAN QUEENSLAND
Located 10 KM from the Carnarvon Highway between Springsure and Injune and the road into Carnarvon Gorge you will find an interesting memorial to a 1943 crash of a C 47 B Dakota. It occurred on 16 th November in a violent electrical storm and all 19 on board perished. There were five US crew, 7 Australian air force and 7 Australian army personell en-route between Darwin and Brisbane.
The C 47 B Dakota was the military version of the Douglas DC3 and over 10,000 were manufactured from 1941 and more if you count various other variants of the aircraft.A quick check of incidents and fatal crashes of the air craft in the years from1941 were quite significant indicating air travel was not that safe back then, The list found did not identify the Rewan crash . Rewan was tiny and the site of the Rewan Remount station, a horse stud designed for police horses, that went broke and cloded in corruption, so the sign indicated.
