Luang Prabang is located in North Central Laos where the Mekong and Nam Khan river's meet. It is a unique and beautiful place with well-reserved Chinese and Colonial architecture and 34 elaborate Buddhist Temples.The Mekong is the twelveth longest river that starts in the Tibtan Plateau and flows  4350 Kilomter through China, Myanmat, Laos, Thailand , Cambodia, and Vietnam. The Nam Khan River is a trubutary of the mekong and mets at Luang Prabang. Although I could not se a bridge over the Mekong ( I am sure there are many) there was a magnificent bridge over the Nam Khan.

It is a daily event as the sun rises in Luang Prabang, the ancient capitol of Laos and now a world heritage site and one not to be missed if you are visiting.

The monks of all ages and sizes collect rice and other food from villages and tourists who sit on stools along Sakkaline Road near WatSensoukharam. Your accommodation will advise the best location and can also arrange transport.

It is necessary to dress appropriately and also provide good quality food and watch for some local traders who may sell some products for you to give to the monks that is not to standard. Some monks who have fallen ill have attempted to avoid the ceremony and the government is keen to keep the tradition as it is a major source of tourist revenue.

GREAT ACCOMMODATION IN LUANG PRABANG

The Luang Say Residence was a very hood  boutique hotel on the edge of Luang Prabang that provided a great room, a pleasant garden environment and a very good restaurant. The service was top class and you could not want anything more from a hotel than Luang Say.

It was a bout a kilometre from the town and the river but they did have a shuttle service and it was a good walk through the streets of Luang Prabang.

Luang Prabang Laos--A Gem

Luang Prabang, the ancient city now protected by UNESCO sits at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khang Rivers is a must see. With its 33 gilded Wat's (temples)  and old well maintained streets, boutique hotels and character it is a must see. Flights are available into the city from Vietnam and a number of other major locations.There is excellent accommodation, the people are friendly and the place is safe.

Be sure to walk all the streets, see the early morning presenting of gifts to the monks and also take a side trip to the Kuang Si Waterfalls. Also try some of the excellent restaurants around.
