ZATOPEC RUINS IN SOUTHERN MEXICO OAXACA

Monte Albán is a large pre-Columbian archaeological site nine kilometres from Oaxaca in Southern Mexico.  The partially excavated civic-ceremonial centre of the Monte Albán site is situated atop an artificial and level ridge. It has an elevation of about 1,940 m and 400 metres above the valley floor. It has several hundred artificial terraces and mounds. It is believed to have been built between 100 BC and 200 AD. The origins of the name are not clear and could refer to a Spanish soldier called Montalban or some derivation of a Zatopec name.

Teotihuacan is a  Mexican pre-Columbian  archaeological complex northeast of Mexico City once one of the largest cities in the world. Within the complex that covers 83 square kilometers is the Avenue of the Dead. It links the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, the Pyramid of the Moon and the Pyramid of the Sun, the latter two with great panoramic views from their summits. it is located 40 Kilometers north east of mexico City and it is best to take a tour from the city. It dates back to the first century and no one is quite sure wht it faded away although there are many theories.

History
The Spanish foundered the city in 1529 and the indigenous population declined. Benito Juarez, the reforming president of Mexico came from the region as did Porfirio Diaz who ruled from 1877 to 1910.It now has a UNESCO World Heritage badge because of its style and churches and is a popular tourist destination. Nearby is the excellent pre-columbian ruins of Monte Alban

Getting There

There are regular flights from Mexico City  that take about an hour.From downtown Oaxaca there are various ways to get to Monte Alban.You can take a taxi or there are numerous buses or shuttles at a number of tourist offices. Taxi is also an option. It should cost about 60 Pesos return for the shuttle.

Mont Alban is a fascinating archeological site dating back to 500 BC. It ended between 700 and 900 and no one knows why the place was abandoned.It sits at 1940 meters above sea level and 400 meters above the valley floor and the city of Oaxaca. It takes about one and a half hours to walk the site and see everything. Wear good shoes as you need to climb steep stone steps.

Expect to see crowds but it is well worth it.Teotihuacan was the largest city in Pre-Columbian Americas  with a population estimated at 125,000. The city is thought to have been established around 100 BC with additions and until 250 AD. It may have lasted until 7th century but it suffered significant damage around 550 AD.The place is quite massive and be prepared for a serious climb.
